The Migration Stories project works to promote constructive dialogue about immigration and to create a deeper understanding of American identities for all who call the heartland home. We encourage everyone to share their stories with the wider community, and to participate in community outreach to learn more about these complicated and important issues. Here are a few easy ways that you can get involved:
- Enter your contact information below to receive updates on upcoming events.
- Keep track of the work of the Migration Stories project by following the Kansas African Studies Center on Facebook and Twitter.
- Go to the Kansas Humanities Council website to initiate a book discussion, speakers bureau talk or film screening in your community.
- Record a video vignette of no more than 3 minutes discussing your experience of immigration, whether from the perspective of an immigrant recently settling in the Midwest or of a longer-term resident who works with immigrants in the local community. Please note your interest in the form below and we will contact you with details on submission.
- KU Libraries are participating in this project by collecting and preserving the experiences of African immigrants in Kansas. Collecting documentation of the African immigration experience in the Midwest allows the preservation of a key aspect of life in Kansas that is at risk of being lost. KU Libraries hope to capture oral histories, memorabilia and documents to highlight migration stories and gain a better depth of understanding into lives of Africans in Kansas. Stories will become part of the research collections currently housed in the Kansas Collection at the Kenneth Spencer Research Library. For more information or to assist KU Libraries in connecting with potential project participants, contact Sherry Williams, curator of the Kansas Collection.
